    Rehearsal occurs when we repeat information over a period of time until we are able to remember it or until we have learnt it

    There are two types of memory rehearsal.

    1. Maintenance rehearsal in which we say the information out loud or keep saying it silently in our mind until it becomes a piece in our short term memory. However this information stored in our short term memory tends to disappear fast such as memorising the number when you want to make a call we tend to forget it before we even dial the phone.

    This forms part of rote learning in which we just memorise information without having learnt it and grasp its meaning. Rehearsal is usually not effective If we want the keep the information in a long term memory.

    2. elaborative rehearsal is the one in which we relate what we are memorising with what is already stored in our long term memory.
