Conservation is the ability to understand that irrespective of changing the appearance of something but its quantity always stay the same. This means even if you distribute something but its mass, number, and volume doesn't change.

At the age below seven years old children may find it hard to understand this concept, just because water is poured in differently shaped glass it will still have the same quantity of liquid irrespective of the shape as long as the water was the same quantity it will still he the same quantity in differently shaped glasses.

Colin thinks that if the burger is split into two now it will mean he has more to eat than when it is whole whereas he can't understand that the burger is still the same quantity even when it is split into two.
