Loess is formed when fine dust particles are carried away by the wind from various regions get deposited on the higher mountain or hilltops. Visually, loess is fine yellowish or brown colored silt. The fine dust that forms these structures consists of crystals of quartz and other minerals.

The size of the dust particles lies between 20-50 micrometers. Loess soil is also considered as most fertile for agricultural activities. Around the world, loess is mostly found in Northern China, central Europe, North America, Russia, and Kazakistan.
