The slaves who took part in the Stono Rebellion of 1739 wanted to reach Florida because at the time it was under Spanish control. The Spanish had promised freedom to any slaves who escaped from the British colonies and settled in St. Augustine.

Explanation:

The Stono Rebellion (sometimes called the Cato Rebellion) was the largest slave uprising in the North American colonies. There were 25 colonists killed in this uprising and up to 50 African slaves. There was said to be a free black community called Fort Mosé outside St. Augustine that was founded just a year earlier. Unfortunately, those who revolted were either killed or captured and re-sold into slavery in the West Indies.
