Explanation: The processing of the "self" or self-awareness is defined as being conscious of oneself, including one's feelings, attitudes, moods, traits and behaviors. Several research seem to support the conclusion that three brain regions are critical for self-awareness and they are: 1. the insular cortex, 2. the anterior cingulate cortex, and 3. the medial prefrontal cortex.

Several factors determine an individual's sense of self but the two that are most prominent are autobiographical memories and morality. These are extremely important defining factors for humans as they often define and/or contribute to choices made or actions taken by individuals; thereby determining their sense of self.
