    This association came about because, during the 19th century, opium production and consumption in China was so great, that this substance became a major social problem, as it developed a huge number of opium addicted chinesses.

    The number of addicted citizens decreases the number of people qualified to work in other sectors of the economy, because the addiction prevented people from doing any activity. This created social and economic chaos, in addition to triggering the opium war.
