The Jamestown Colony was started and funded by a joint-stock company known as the Virginia Company of London, also known simply as the London Company, which also held the royal charter that allowed the colony to operate. Be aware that the Virginia Company of London was also known by a third name, "The Charter of the Virginia Company of London," which shouldn't be confused with the actual charter, or official royal document, that authorized the colony.
