After the Compromise of 1850, the Utah Territory was created, which encompassed all of modern-day Utah and parts of Nevada, Wyoming, and Colorado. Prior to 1850, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints proposed a larger territory deemed the State of Deseret, which would have included a larger swath of the American Southwest; however, this state never came into being since the Utah Territory was created in its stead.
