    Berkeley envisioned an autonomous society that boasted of a diversified economy. He wanted to nurture a system of free trade as opposed to mercantilist system and the people to grow a wide range of crops. He also wanted the local assembly to exercise control over local matters. Rebellion prevented him from achieving all his goals
