How did the watergate scandal shape politics in the 1970s

Watergate was a tragedy. Richard Nixon had defeated George McGovern by the biggest landslide up to that time.

However, the Viet Nam war and draft had turned many young people against government. They distrusted the federal government, and there were many domestic terrorist incidents, campus riots, and race riots.

Then the Watergate Scandal broke out. Nixon tried hiding behind his White House power claiming a privileged position. Tape recordings were produced proving he lied about his knowledge of the incident. More and more people because disillusioned with Nixon and his staff.

It was a shame. Nixon had a brilliant team around him, but they were afraid of him. He had a fantastic foreign policy. He was highly intelligent and driven. But the more he spoke, the less people trusted him. Until that time, people generally trusted the president, regardless of who it was. Integrity tanked, and the office was sullied

It led to corruption in the government. It showed the American citizens that people were corrupt and using the bank money wrongly. It became a huge scandal because Bernstein and Woodward, two journalist wrote about it. The people working for those who were part of the scandal would not talk because the company was watching them and making sure they kept their mouths shut.
