What does the theory of uniformitarianism state?

    Uniformitarianism states that natural processes in the earth and in nature generally take place today in the same way as they used to occur in the distant past. In geology this suggests that changes in the earth's crust and surface have been gradually happening from prehistoric times in much the same way as it happens now with no sudden changes.
