There is the abolition of slavery. There probably could be no Civil Rights Movement without the former slaves freedom.
The South lost a lot, and was disturbed economically and had to go through Reconstruction. The Confederate flag still flies. The war was a democratic experience or test for the people. The Union was proved more important than states' rights.
