Which of the following best explains why japan quickly built up its military in the late 1800's?

In absence of choices, I would say that the best answer was so that they could match up to the Western powers. Western imperial rule conquered most parts of Asia which is what made Japan want to absorb Western technology to boost up their military so that they wouldn't be controlled.
