    Splinter parties can cause the public vote and electoral vote in some cases to be split. Take for example Taft Roosevelt and Wilson. Roosevelt runs as a progressive and it splits his votes with Taft leading Wilson to win the election

    they can play a spoiler role in elections by taking critical votes from a major party e. g. Ross Perot in 92 took votes from Bush and Ralph Nader in 2000 took votes from Gore.
