    Veterans Day was originally known as "Armistice Day" and it is celebrated by the countries of the British Commonwealth and the United States. France has a similar remembrance to commemorate their losses and their servicemen. Veterans Day commemorates the first anniversary of the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1919.

It honors the end of World War I, which is memorialized by the phrase: "in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. At the time it was called Armistice Day. In 1954, the name was officially changed in the United States to Veterans Day by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
