    Veterans Day was originally known as "Armistice Day" and it is celebrated by the countries of the British Commonwealth and the United States. France has a similar remembrance to commemorate their losses and their servicemen. Veterans Day commemorates the first anniversary of the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1919.

It honors the end of World War I, which is memorialized by the phrase: "in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. At the time it was called Armistice Day.
