    An athlete who has sustained a career-ending injury will experience emotional reactions or the five stages of grief which are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

    At the denial stage, the athlete refuses to come to terms with his ended career and then it progresses to the emotion of anger which the athlete uses to mask the pains he/she feels about the situation.

    Bargaining is the stage at which the athlete considers alternatives to gain control of his/her emotions, at this stage, the individual creates a lot of creates "what if" and "if only" statements.
