Why do most explorers' routes seem to wander instead of traveling in straight lines?

    They travelled along water sources. Land explorers followed rives, while explorers by sea kept close to land. It is that way so explorers of land may have a water source to drink from or bathe in. Travelling far enough away would be a death wish.
