Three ways geography has impacted ethnic groups settling in north america

The geography of North America is heavily diverse from region to region. This has greatly impacted the various ethnic groups that have made North America home.

In the southern US, farmland is plentiful which allowed plantations to be very profitable. This contributed to a large influx of slavery in the South, and to this day a majority of African Americans in the US still reside in the South.

In the North, farming was not as profitable as in the South, resulting in the North building more factories and places of industry for manufacturing. This lead to a large influx of immigrants who came into New York and Northern cities to seek better working opportunities. To this day, New York is still home to over a million immigrants who come and seek work in the industrial hub of the North.

Also in the Southwest, a large number of Hispanics call the region home. Mexico and Latin America is just south of the US border unlike the countries of origin across the Pacific and Atlantic. This gives the Hispanic community a place to reside in the US that is not at all far from where they or their families have come from. This results in the Southwest having a large concentration of Hispanics in the US.
