    Speech segmentation refers to the capability of humans (or more recently, machines) to identify boundaries between words in spoken language. Factors such as a person talking too fast, not loud enough, or with a strange accent, could make these gaps go unnoticed.

    When it comes to speech recognition software this is especially important, as the machine doesn't have the human capability to rely on context, previous knowledge or even guessing what the other is trying to say to understand the message; the machine relies only on what is explicitly being said.
