The "Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves" entered into force on January 1, 1808, ending the American slave trade for good. On his State of the Union Address of 1806, president Thomas Jefferson denounced slavery, deeming it a gross violation of human rights. Congress passed the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves on March 2, 1807, with president Jefferson signing the bill that very same day.
