The mesolimbic pathway, located in the brain stem, is often referred to as the reward path. This area is located in the ventral tegmental area or VTA. Interestingly enough, this area generally deals with basic survival, but the ventral tegmental area projects to the nucleus accumbens (thought to be the reward center).
