The North was commanded by the industrial bourgeoisie, which defended customs protectionism because it was unable to compete with the prices of English products of superior quality. The South, which was based on the agrarian economy, was led by an aristocracy that defended freedom of trade, preferring to buy products from England, since the protectionist economy made the region dependent on the North, for exporting part of its production and buy your manufactured goods.

The South States broke with the Union, forming the Confederate States of America, on February 8, 1861. The leadership of the movement fell to South Carolina, to which Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi joined, Florida among others. Richmond, Virginia, became the capital of the new country and Jefferson Davis was hailed as the president of the Confederate States. The rebel troops were led by Commander Robert Lee.

In 1863, the most important battle took place - the Battle of Gettysburg - which guaranteed victory for Union forces. Lincoln then decreed the abolition of slavery across the country, which only came into force with the end of the fighting and the defeat in the South, in 1865. That same year, Abraham Lincoln was murdered by a southern fanatic.
