Also, they can be referred to as American colonies of France, but not Canadian colonies as Canada was neither a country in that period nor it existed as an entity.

    Because of their history as French colonies Quebec and Ontario has lot of French speakers and the French culture is widely spread. In Quebec the French culture and language actually dominate and the majority of the people don't feel Canadian and want to be independent. Both of these territories nowadays are part of the country of Canada and they are both provinces in it.
