    Answer: The united nations in an international, intergovernmental body made up of nations around the world. it was formed after the second world war as nations felt it was necessary to prevent a war of such a large scale from ever happening again.

    The main political functions of the united nations are stream lined into the sustenance of international peace and international security.

    The internal organizational structure of the united nations is made up of five arms which include the general assembly, the security council, the economic and social council, the international court of justice and the united nations secretariat.

    Among the five bodies that make up the structure of the united nations, two play most prominent roles. They are, the general assembly and the security council.

    The general assembly is an all encompassing body made up of all U. N member states. They meet annually or when emergencies arise. decisions deliberated upon at the general assembly are usually put to vote and must be agreed upon by two thirds of the member states or simple majority on matters not bothering on peace, security and admittance of new members. the general assembly makes recommendations on matters which are to be evaluated by the security council.

    The security council till date stands to be the most powerful arm of the united nations. it is mainly saddled with the responsibility of maintaining peace and security around the world. decisions made at the security council are binding on all nations as agreed by all nations under the terms of charter Article 25.

    The security council is made up of 15 states, of which 5 of the most powerful nations remain permanent members. these five nations include: China, the United kingdom, the United States, France, and Russia. Each of these permanent member nations holds veto power over decisions taken by the U. N meaning each can prevent an adoption of a resolution if it is unsatisfied with the terms. The security council is headed by a president, this position is rotated emphatically on a month by month basis.
