The War of 1812 essentially gave the fledgling US its true independence. The British had been conscripting sailors of ships flying the American Flag. They were removing American citizens without consideration of their independence. President Madison urged Congress to declare war against Britain in retaliation. Though the conscription stopped, the war went on. It lasted nearly three years and resulted in the destruction of Washington, DC.
