What might explain why the two students found different measurements for the length of the same side of the textbook?

    One factor that could have been the cause of this was an error in measurement. It could either be that the measuring instrument was not read from directly above (parallax error) or there could have been an error in estimation if the edge of the book does not lie on a measured line but instead between two of them thus resulting in the need for an approximation.
