Many different types of sand dunes exist, all of which are formed due to varying directions of the winds. Some predominant types of sand dunes are barchan dunes, linear dunes, transverse dunes, parabolic dunes and star dunes.

The sand dunes that are formed under winds coming from different directions but take the direction of the prevailing wind are known as transverse dunes.
