The following statements concern the relationship between mitochondrial hydrogen ion concentration and energy storage as atp during oxidative phosphorylation. Classify each statement as either accurate or inaccurate.

a) Accurate Statements

b) Inaccurate Statements

1. Hydrogen ions cannot freely pass through the inner mitachondrial membrane

2. H + concentration is lower in the mitochondrial matrix than in the intermembrane space

3. H + ions move through a channel formed by ATP synthase releasing energy to form ATP

4. The pH in the mitochondrial matrix is lower than the pH in the intermembrane space

5. ATP synthase uses energy from ATP to move H + into the mitochondrial matrix

    The correct answer will be

    A. Accurate options - 1, 2, 3

    B. Inaccurate options - 4, 5, 6

    Explanation:

The process of electron transport chain and the oxidative phosphorylation are interlinked during cellular respiration as the movement of an electron through transport complexes leads to the movement of H⁺ ions from the mitochondrial matrix side to the intermembrane side of the mitochondria.

This movement of hydrogen ions leads to the formation of proton motive force in which the matrix posses low hydrogen ions (High pH) whereas the intermembrane surface possesses high hydrogen ions (low pH).

This instability leads to developing the concentration gradient and the hydrogen ions move from the ATP Synthase protein. The ATP synthase uses the energy provided by the backflow of the hydrogen ions and converts the ADP to ATP.
