The schoolyard is like the arctic tundra in the regard that, just like the harsh climatic cold climate of the arctic tundra makes it difficult for trees to grow well there, with only a few species of plants being able to survive. Most lands in the arctic tundra are often covered with snow, making the lands difficult to support more life.
In schoolyards, we have similar harsh conditions that barely support much variety of plants considering the several hard surfaces and harsh condition plants would struggle to survive in.
