The two major differences between the normal canopy trail ants and the zombie ants are:

Zombie ants are affected by fungus and they enter the zombie like state with in few days of contact with spored released by fungus while canopy trail ants are normal ants without any infection. This infection affects the brain of the ants which produces alterations in the brain and the ant behaves abnormally. It may even die in an unexposed condition. Normal

Normal canopy trail ants live in rain forest canopies while the zombie ants prefer to live out of canopies as their muscles fibers are forced apart and ant's body and head gets atrophy.
