The orange gene (O) controls the production of a pigment (pheomelanin) that gives Bengal tigers their orange coat color. Felines that are homozygous for the inactive version of the gene (oo) fail to make pheomelanin and have white fur. If a white tiger (oo) mates with a carrier for the trait (Oo), what are the odds that they will have a white tiger cub?

    0.5

    Explanation:

    Given, gene O results in production of pigment.

    OO, Oo = Orange

    oo = white

    If Oo X oo:

    O o

    o Oo oo

    o Oo oo

    Half of the progeny will have Oo genotype so they will be heterozygous and will have orange fur. Other half will have oo genotype so they will be homozygous recessive and will have white fur. So the odds of having a white tiger cub is 0.5.
