    Feature detection allows the nervous system to sort out and interpret the different types of stimuli that enters the eye. In this case the stimuli is the shape and orientation of the object as well as the difference between the actual shape and the background of the object.

    This allows the organism to determine what is important and what really is just irrelevant.
