The major source of glucose released to elevate a low blood glucose level is glycogen. If the blood glucose level falls to dangerous levels, the alpha cells of the pancreas release glucagon, a hormone whose effects on liver cells act to increase blood glucose levels. The hormone converts glycogen into glucose a process called glycogenolysis.
