The complete separation of a bone from its normal position in a joint is known as a dislocation.

A dislocation is a painful condition in which there is an injury to a joint (an area where two or more bones are joined together). The ends of the bones are unexpectedly forced from their normal position which temporarily deforms and makes the joint immovable. Dislocation usually occurs in shoulders and fingers. Other body parts it can occur include hips and elbows. Symptoms of a dislocation include visibly deformed joint, swollen joint and intense pain around the affected joint area.
