Polycystic kidney disease is an autosomal dominant (autosomal recessive for pediatric patients) disease wherein there is development of multiple cysts in the kidneys, usually bilateral; sometimes with liver involvement. Patient's with polycystic kidney disease shall be monitored for acute on chronic kidney injury therefore the management should be tailored to a low salt diet (to prevent fluid overload), avoiding contact sports (to prevent rupture of the renal capsule and the Gerota's fascia), keeping blood pressure less than 130/88, and ACE inhibitors for controlling hypertension (since people with kidney disease present with hypertension often).
