The type of fibers in a nerve determines the conduction velocity of the nerve and the factors contributing to the type of fiber is the degree of myelination and the diameter of the fiber; wherein the larger the diameter and the greater degree of myelination, the faster the conduction velocity. What classifies the spinal never whether motor or sensory is its origin in the spinal cord. Nerves originating in the anterior or ventral spinal cord are motor nerves and nerves originating in the posterior or dorsal spinal cord are sensory nerves.
