The plants contain two main types of vessels which branch and reach to every part of the plant. The phloem vessel is involved in the transportation of food or nutrients from the leaves to other parts of the plant. The xylem is involved in transporting water from roots to other parts of the plant.

The leaves of plants and trees have structures called stomata. When the stomata open, water moves out of them and evaporates into the air by the process of diffusion. As a result, the cells in the leaves have less water as compared to the surrounding cells. Hence, a concentration gradient or tension is developed. Due to this tension water is pulled up into the leaves. This pulling of water will allow the roots to take more water from the soil.
