    The correct answer is b. 3 ATP molecules.

    During glycolysis, glucose (6 carbon) is broken down to Pyruvate (3 carbon). This the first phase of cellular respiration occurs in cytoplasm of a living cell. Further breakdown of pyruvate takes place in the matrix of a mitochondria. Before the start of the Krebs cycle, pyruvate produced in the cytoplasm is converted into acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl CoA). Acetyl CoA is enters into Krebs cycle. One pyruvate yields 3 CO₂ molecules 1 ATP molecule, 4 NADH molecules and 1 FADH₂ molecule through Krebs cycle. It does not produce 3 ATP molecules.
