Whittaker's classification scheme recognizes five kingdoms : Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. Based on RNA studies Carl Woese divided the prokaryotes (Kingdom Monera) into two kingdoms, called Eubacteria and Archaebacteria.
