Exfoliation domes form in rocks prone to expansion and the formation of expansion joints. Deeply buried rock bodies, such as plutons, expand as they are uplifted and eroded. This process is called sheeting.

The development of an exfoliation dome begins with sheeting (Sheeting, or Contour Weathering, is a type of physical weathering in which a single layer of rock is broken off. The layer, or sheet, tends to break off of the rock in the same shape or form of the rock or gravestone.)

this process occurs in part because of the great lessening in pressure when the superimposing rock is eroded away and unloading and weathering occurs
