The Gakkal Ridge is an area where two ocean tectonic plates are diverging. It was formed by two divergent tectonic plates named North American plate and the Eurasian plate. It is a mid-ocean ridge formed by plate tectonics. The mid-ocean ridge formation takes place due to uplifting of ocean floors occurs with respect to convection currents which lead to rise in the mantle beneath the oceanic crust and creates magma where two tectonic plates meet at a diverging boundary. This ridge is slow spreading with active volcanic activity with varying degrees. It is the region of earthquakes have been detected from the mantle, below the crust, which is very unsual for a mid-ocean ridge.
