Besides aluminium oxide and silicon dioxide, other oxides are important catalysts. For example, in the Contact Process used to manufacture sulfuric acid, the catalyst for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide is vanadium oxide on the surface of silica: Potassium sulfate is added as a promoter.
