Fathers always determine the gender of the offspring in humans is true. This because mothers have two X chromosomes whereas fathers have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. It is entirely dependent upon which chromosome from the father does the zygote contain. If father gives an X chromosome then the resulting child is a female whereas if the father gives the Y chromosome, then the resulting child is a male. Hence, the mothers cannot decide the gender of their child as they have both X chromosomes whereas it is the X or the Y chromosome for the father which determines whether it will be a girl or a boy.

    Genotype of a female: XX

    Genotype of a male: XY
