    I think the reason why the pyramid of biomass of aquatic animals are inverted is because of the relative longevity and the reproductive capacity of predators verses plankton. In addition, tertiary consumers can be more abundant than primary producers, but primary producers will always have the highest quality energy. Thus, certain aquatic ecosystems have inverted biomass pyramids; because producers (phytoplankton) are consumed so quickly that they are outweighed by primary consumers (zooplankton).
