The femur bone in the human leg has a minimum effective cross section of about 3.0 cm^2. How much compressive force can it wthstand before breaking? (compressive strength of bone = 170 x 10^6 N/m)

    Pressure or Stress = Force / Area More than 1000 tons of force is needed to shatter a femur. "Landing from a jump exerts half a ton of force within your femur."

    I think y ou are missing some information here. Were you given the stress value?

    P = F/A

    170 x 10^6 N/m^2 = F / (0.03 m^2)

    F = 5.10 x 10^6 N
