December 21st in the Northern because of the winter solstice. The sun reaches its most southerly declination of - 23.4 degrees. In other words, it is tilted furthest away from the Sun. Therefore, there is no direct sunlight making the hours shorter. In the Southern hemisphere summer days are longer.
