First of all, speciation in general means the process of forming new species. For example, speciation occurs when two populations of the same species live in distinct places and after a while they cannot reproduce with a member of the other population due to new adaptations. These 2 populations are now distinct species. Polyploidy is a failure in the reproduction process of an organism that leads to its offspring having several copies of the genetic material of the parent (in particular, there is a failed meiosis process). In plants this is usually a good adaptation, with triploid plants being grown for their healthy fruit and crop in comparison to the normal diploid ones. However, diploid and triploid or tetraploid organisms cannot reproduce with each other (most of the time) and after a long time, 2 distinct species might emerge. Thus, polyploidy is a process of speciation and since it happens frequently in plants, a rather important one.
