    The desire to earn profits.

The whole market system is a complex way for everyone to be selfish and make the most money. The only reason they would reduce prices and increased efficiency is to get a comparative advantage over their competitor so as to sell more goods and services. Low prices are a result, not cause, of free enterprise. Even planned economies has very diverse goods and services. Free enterprise actually has more government control than some types of markets, in the form of taxes, ceilings, floors, and subsidies.
