A laboratory animal exercised on a treadmill raises a 200 g mass 1.55 m, and at the same time loses 5.0 J energy as heat. Assume the animal is a closed system. How much does its internal energy change?

    W = P. E = 200 * 1.55 * 9.8 = 3308 J

    Q = - 5.0 J

    ΔU = W + Q

    = 3308 + ( - 5) = 3303 J or 3.303 kJ
