Solids have one static volume and shape and particles of solids move a short distance, practically against each other, before hitting one another.

Liquids fill the volume and take the shape of the container they are placed in and particles move a longer distance before hitting one another and bouncing back to each other

Gases fill shape and volume of their container and their particles move freely about a larger space than either solid or liquid and hit one another bouncing
